The Canyons is the latest of three skiing areas around the little mining town Park City. For whomever Deer Valley is too fancy and Park City is too cool, you will fit here perfectly. Because The Canyons stands for one thing: A relaxed way of skiing!
The Canyons is, with 185 slopes and 4000 acres of skiable slopes, Utah´s largest skiing area. Yet it is still often overshadowed by its famous neighbors, but wrongfully so! At The Canyons a skiing adventure of a special kind awaits you.
Even before entering the actual skiing area, one must take a ski lift. Due to the parking space being located way down below the skiing area, a small cableway with open gondolas was built. The so-called Cabriolet-Lift carries the skiers from the parking space up to the skiing area for free.
Having arrived there, you will find two more noteworthy features: Firstly, the Red Pine Gondola is the only gondola within the three skiing areas around Park City. Secondly, here´s where the Orange Bubble Lift is located. This is something to take a pride in because the Doppelmayr-lift with a weather protection cover and heatable seats is one of a kind – not only in Utah but in all of North America!
185 slopes – One is spoilt for choice
Widely spread slopes wind down the nine peaks of The Canyons. Thus, you might as well get lost as you may discover new runs. Luckily, you always arrive at the desired ski lift. And yet there´s a chance of crossing paths with one or two moose in the process. For they are very common within the mountains of The Canyons and with a bit of luck you can spot them while riding the ski lift.
The Canyons is large enough for people of all ability levels to find plenty of slopes to explore. However, especially for more advanced skiers, The Canyons represents a true paradise. 44% of the slopes are marked intermediate. For instance, the slopes that lead to the Tombstone Lift offer endless possibilities. Yet, particularly exceptional is the large offer of runs that are marked as black runs, the Black Diamond runs. Those namely account for nearly half of all the slopes of the whole skiing area.
All in all there are five bowls. But under the right conditions it is possible to also move freely across almost the entire skiing area. To get to some of the slopes you have to hike a little bit but it´s definitely worth it! The view from up the mountain peak Ninety-Nine, at an altitude of over 3000 meters, is breathtaking and this is also the starting point of numerous Black Diamond Runs. Yet, you can get there more comfortably by helicopter as Heliskiing is permitted at The Canyons!
Chilling at the terrain park and relaxing at the Ski Beach
The Canyons does not need to hide from its famous neighbor Park City Mountain regarding terrain parks. There are three: Painted Horse Progression Park, Transitions Terrain Park and Elwoods Natural Zone. All are located on the northern side of the skiing area. There are six all natural half pipes as well. Thus, everything a freestyler could hope for has been provided!
After all the skiing fun there is one thing you should not miss out on when visiting The Canyons: The Ski Beach. Deck chairs await you at the valley stations to let you fully enjoy the sun once more. Yet, for those who do not want to miss out on après ski in America, they can even find a real après ski bar. However keep in mind to bring your ID, otherwise you won´t be served. The bar Crafts right at the ski area center is highly recommendable. here you can gather new strength with hot wings and pizza after a strenuous skiing day.
