Victory and crystal globe for Ligety in giant slalom
At the second day at the World Cup finals in Bormio US-American Ted Ligety achieved the victory in giant slalom and could even hold the crystal globe for the discipline in his hands. Austria´s Benjamin Raich ranked on the second place ahead of the surprising third Cyprien Richard from France. Bode Miller dropped out but nevertheless he had enough points to make sure the win of the overall World Cup.First victory then crystal globe US-American Ligety needed a time of 2:18,04 minutes altogether to take home the second victory of the season. Behind the Olympic Champion in the Combined discipline Benjamin Raich became second and so was out of reach for the discipline World Cup. French Cyprien Richard provided for the biggest surprise of the day. After his so far best position in World Cup had been a ninth place in giant slalom in Kranjska Gora he stormed ahead to the third place at the end of the season. Ligety from seven to one In the second run Frenchmen Richard clocked the minimum time first but Ligety who was seventh after the first run put down a brilliant line and headed for the new benchmark. So he put Raich under pressure who had to win at all costs. But the Austrian didn´t succeed and so it was Ligety who was able to take the globe home. Cyprien Richard claimed the third place at the end and so he celebrated the first arrival on the podium in World Cup. Miller new overall Wolrd Cup winner Already before the race was started it was clear that Bode Miller was the new winner of the overall World Cup. Runner-up Didier Cuche announced that he would resign a start in Slalom the other day and so gave up his chances to catch up the necessary points. But by a fifth place in giant slalom the Swiss achieved a placable ending. So after the winter 2004/2005 Miller is noted as overall Wolrd Cup winner for the second time in his career. SKI |
