Ajax - the oldest ski resort in Aspen! |
| Aspen Mountain was founded by the European Friedl Pfeifer and the American Walter Paepcke and opened its gates the very first time on January 11th 1947. Only three years later Aspen attained international fame due to hosting the ski-world-championships. Today Aspen is world famous and a popular destination for winter enthusiasts from all over the globe! Those travelling to Aspen from Denver face a relatively long (350 km) voyage (via Interstate 70, at Gelnwood Springs switch to the CO82 South). The nice fact that the slopes at Ajax terminate in downtown Aspen has one large disadvantage. There are hardly any parking lots to be found near the lift bases. Lucky ones can park their cars on the parking places (liable to charge) on the side of the road. We recommend to park the car at the “Rio Grande Parking Plaza” (also with charge). From there a free shuttle bus takes the winter tourists to Ajax base. Free parking lots are not to be found in Aspen. Aspen visitors can also travel to Aspen by plane. Direct flights to Aspen / Pitkin County Airport are offered from Denver, Chicago, San Francisco, Salt Lake City and Phoenix. |
