Aspen can afford to fit each of the 4 ski resorts to a certain ability level. Buttermilk, located only 4 km outside Aspen Village is the perfect novice resort. Aspen Mountain however is world famous for its demanding mogul slopes and powder runs. The “Ridge of Bell” off-pist-area is among the nicest free-ride terrains to be found in the US. Let alone the difficult slopes at “Gentleman`s Ridge”, true challenge even for expert skiers! Only downer, Ajax counts only 50 km of skiable terrain and is therefore among the smaller resorts. Those longing for more trails should ski in Snowmass as winter athletes have 137 km of skiable terrain at their disposal there. Advantageous in Ajax is the fact that trails terminate in Aspen Village. Ski in ski out, or switch from the slopes directly to an après ski location! Our conclusion: a wonderful ski resort for free-rider and powder fans, snowboarder and less experienced skiers are better off at Snowmass.
