Axalp on Brienz – The little ski resort that could!

With only nine trails, Axalp is one the the smallest ski resorts in the Bernese Oberland, which might partially explain why it is not very well known. This breathtaking resort lies above Lake Brienz and is still uncharted territory for many winter sports fans. The best way to get there driving in from the west (Bern) is to take the autobahns A6 and A8. Coming from the northeast you should get on the A2 through Lucerne and then exit onto A8. Follow the signs toward Interlaken / Brienz and drive around the south side of the lake. Here you will already begin to see signs directing you to Axalp. The resort lies between 4921 and 6562 ft (1500 – 2000m) above sea level, an altitude that guarantees good snow conditions from December to April. But in case of bad weather, snow tires, or better yet, snow chains are crucial in order to ensure that you reach the mountain village without any problems.
