Brigels – a ski resort beautifully embedded between Reto-Romansch villages

Brigels (the old Reto-Romansch name is Breil) lies on an open and wonderfully sun-drenched mountain terrace at an altitude between 1000 and 1300 metres above sea level in the midst of the “Vorderrheintal” (Vorderrhein-valley). Brigels is one of the few old Reto-Romansch (a Latin-derived language spoken from the eastern Swiss Alps to north-eastern Italy) villages that was able to keep its old character. The center of Brigels still looks like it did about hundred years ago. Brigels is most conveniently accessible from the north east via the highway A13 (Chur). Exit highway at Reichenau and follow the signs to Breil/Brigels. Unfortunately in winter travelling by car to Brigels from the west is not possible, because of the closed mountain passes “Oberalppass” and “Furkapass”. The car can however be put on the train which uses the Furka Base Tunnel to connect the cantons Valais and Uri. Parking lots are sufficient a bit outside of the village Brigels but in walking distance to the cash offices. Another entrance of the ski resort is situated at the east of Brigels in Waltensburg. You also shouldn´t miss to visit the old church in the heart of Waltensburg with beautiful fresco created in the 14th century.
