Hardly any other city on the southern hemisphere has committed itself to snow sports as much as Queenstown. New Zealand’s four largest ski resorts “Coronet Peak”, “The Remarkables”, “Cardrona” and “Treble Cone” are all situated in proximity to this popular city. “Coronet Peak Ski Arena” was founded in 1947 and is therefore the oldest commercial ski resort in the country and it still enjoys great popularity. Furthermore it is the most comfortable accessible winter sports resort in New Zealand (thanks to a tarred access road). From Queenstown it takes less than half an hour (18 km) to “Coronet Peak” which lies on 1168m above seal level. An international airport is situated in Queenstown, therefore the winter sports region is a popular international destination. By car Queenstown is most comfortably reachable via the “Major Road 6”. From Dunedin it takes about 3.5 hours, from Christchurch it takes about 6 hours. Whether the first commercial ski resort in New Zealand can still be counted to the top resorts on the southern hemisphere you can find out by clicking the different categories of our test report.
