Crested Butte - From silver to white gold!

Just like many other American ski resorts, Crested Butte also began as a silver-mining town at the end of the 19th century. After almost all the mines were shut down in the 1950s, the town began looking for other ways to revive the economy in the ideally-situated mountain town. When the schools had to be shut down as well in the 60s due to the shrinking population, they decided to build the ski resort on Mt. Crested Butte. Today, the Crested Butte Mountain Resort, with its 500 hectares and 16 lifts, is one of the larger ski areas in Colorado. The Gunnison Crested Butte Regional Airport is located 31 miles (50km) away and the Montrose Regional Airport is about 99 miles (160km) away, and both have regular flights to Denver. If you're driving in from Denver, you should plan in about five hours for the drive which goes through Fairplay (northeast of Crested Butte).
