Durango Purgatory: Family ski resort in southwestern Colorado!

The Durango Mountain Resort is located up the mountain from the little ski town of Purgatory, Colorado. Purgatory can be loosely translated as „hell.“ Its name can be traced back to a Spanish expedition in the 18th century, during which one of the expeditioners drowned in the Animas River. Purgatory lies about 31 miles (50km) north of Durango in La Plata County in southwestern Colorado. The ski area is located off the interstate in the San Juan National Forest. We recommend flying into the Durango-La Plata County Airport, which is serviced daily by various airlines with flights coming in from Denver and Phoenix. Once you're in Durango you can just get on highway 550 heading north and follow it all the way to Purgatory. Another option would be to fly into Montrose (also serviced by multiple airlines with flights in from Denver) and then drive south on highway 550 until you reach the resort (2-3 hours). This route, which leads over quite a few mountain passes, can prove risky if a storm comes in. Read on to find out whether the Durango Mountain Resort lives up to its reputation as Colorado's best family ski area.
