Gerlitzen – A hot tip in the Austrian state of Carinthia!
The ski resort Gerlitzen (1000 - 1911m above sea-level) is located in the geographical middle of Carinthia (the southernmost state in Austria), near the city of Villach and not far from the shores of Lake Ossiach. With a total of 40 kilometers of groomed and 12 kilometers of ungroomed slopes, Gerlitzen isn’t one of the largest resorts in Carinthia, but it did score well in quite a few of our test categories. Thanks to its favorable location right off of the A10 autobahn (Exit Ossiacher See), the little valley village of Annenheim is very easy to get to no matter which direction you’re driving in from. The parking lots P1-P3 normally fill up quickly, particularly on the weekends, which means you might be forced to park in lot number 4 (with 1000 spots), about a kilometer away from the base. Thanks to the free shuttle buses, however, which run in 1-minute intervals and drop you off right at the base of Kanzelbahn/Annenheim, that’s actually not as bad as it sounds. There is also a second base at Klosterle, Arriach with 800 parking spots. A total of 16, mostly modern lifts move skiers and boarders comfortably up the mountain at Gerlitzen.
