Grand Targhee: Cowboy feeling and skiing fun in Grand Teton National Park.
Experiencing the local nature and culture is always a big part of a ski vacation. The quaint ski area Grand Targhee, located on the border between the states of Wyoming and Idaho, illustrates this point perfectly. Though not exactly one of the largest ski resorts in America with only five lifts, the rugged Teton mountain range and the view of the 13,000 foot peaks surrounding Grand Teton (13,770 ft/4197m) make a day of skiing at Grand Targhee a unique experience. Western Wyoming used to be home to the Shoshone and Blackfoot indian tribes. The ski area itself was named after the well-known Chief Targhee. A trip to Wyoming and the Grand Teton National Park are well worth it for winter athletes, considering Jackson Hole, yet another world famous resort, is located just an hour’s drive away. Grand Targhee is surrounded by the trees of the Targhee National Forest. Alta, the nearest village, has 469 inhabitants and lies 12.4 miles (20km) west of it. A six-hour drive from Salt Lake City, the route is a scenic one through unadulterated nature. For a quicker trip, fly into the airport in Jackson Hole (ca. 50 miles/80km away) or Idaho Falls (ca. 87miles/140km away).| Final grade: |
