Hinterstoder – a great addition to upper Austria’s winter resorts!
As opposed to their counterparts in Tyrol or Vorarlberg (states in Austria), the eastern Alps located in upper and lower Austria aren’t exactly known as major winter sport regions. Thanks to the expansion of the A8 (Passau to Linz) and A9 (Linz to Graz) autobahns, however, more and more prudent winter athletes are deciding to spend their skiing vacations in Austria’s more easterly states. With 36 total kilometers of slopes, Hinterstoder is among the largest ski resorts in upper Austria. Nearby Wurzeralm (please see test report “Wurzeralm”) has another 20 kilometers of slopes to offer, and with a 5-day ski pass, you’ll be able to get into both using the same ticket. If you’re driving in from the north, we recommend going through Passau or Linz and continuing on until you get to the autobahn junction “Voralpenkreuz” at Wels. Coming from Munich, you’ll take the A8 to Salzburg and then the A1 toward Linz and then continue on to Voralpenkreuz. After you hit Voralpenkreuz, you’ll take the Pyhrn autobahn (A9) and exit at St. Pankraz. Once you get there you’ll start seeing signs leading you to Hinterstoder and you’ll follow the B138 all the way to the ski area. There’s plenty of parking at the entrance, and early birds might even be able to snag one of the much-coveted parking spots directly at the base terminal of the Hossbahn. But even if you’re not quite so lucky, you’ll only have about a 300 meter walk before the skiing fun at Hinterstoder can begin.| Final grade: |
