Lake Louise – An easily-accessible national park with nature in its purest state!
Lake Louise is a two hour-drive away from the international airport in Calgary – right on the border between British Columbia and Alberta. Coming in from the east and following Highway 1, you’ll be happy to find not a single mountain pass on your way there. The drive coming in from the west on the same highway can turn out to be slightly more complicated, with Rogers Pass presenting itself along the way. This road can be very tricky to drive on and is often closed completely due to avalanche risk and heavy snowfall. When planning your trip, you might find this website – www.drivebc.ca – with the current road conditions, extremely helpful. We recommend winter vacationers driving in from the USA take either Highway 95 or the route going through Calgary. Located in Banff National Park, the Lake Louise resort offers skiers incredible views of nature untouched from all over the ski area. In fact, the only thing you will see besides pure nature is the Fairmont Chateau hotel situated on Lake Louise. Apart from a few hotels, a youth hostel and a one supermarket, there’s not really much to be seen in the little town of Lake Louise. One disadvantage of skiing in such a wonderfully scenic national park is the $20 fee you’re required to pay per day, per car (March 2011). You can also take a bus the 60 kilometers from the renowned town of Banff into Lake Louise. This service is free if you purchase a “Tri-Ticket, which is valid in all three of the ski resorts surrounding Banff – Sunshine Village, Norquay and Lake Louise. This is probably the right solution for those of you who like to have your peaceful surroundings during the day and something slightly rowdier at night. Banff will provide you with a bustling night-life after a day of breathtaking panoramic views at Lake Louise. Should you, however, decide to drive yourself to the resort, you will be pleased to find plenty of parking right at the base for a stress-free start to your day on the slopes. Being that the village of Lake Louise is very small and located approximately 2km from the base, you’ll find everything you need at the resort in one structure at the base, which, though quite large, has been impressively well-incorporated into the surrounding landscape.| Final grade: |
