California`s image is dominated by infinite beaches on the west-coast and the metropolises San Francisco and Los Angeles. But California has so much more to offer – especially in the mountaineering and skiing department! In eastern California right at the boarder to Nevada the Sierra Nevada awaits all those that are in search of pristine mountain regions off the beaten track. Mammoth Mountain is located in proximity to the world famous “Yosemite Nationalpark” and is easily accessible via Highway 395. If you are coming from San Francisco keep in mind that Highway 120 that leads through Yosemite Nationalpark is closed in winter. It is most recommendable to take the Interstate 80, then switch onto Highway 50 which takes you directly to Highway 395. From Los Angeles the “State Route 14” takes you directly to Highway 395. This route is especially nice as you travel along “Death Valley” and via “Mount Whitney” up into the high valleys of the Sierra Nevada on 8000 ft above sea level (2500m).” Mammoth Mountain” ranges up to 11.053 ft (3369m) and despite its southern exposure is among the ski resorts with the longest ski season in the USA. You can choose from 5 different bases to access Mammoth Mountain. The most comfortable entry is in Mammoth Village where the “Village Gondola” starting from the “Mountain Center” takes you into the beautiful ski resort. Whether one of the sunniest and most snow sure ski resorts scores well in our test, you will find out by clicking through the different categories.
