Mt Dobson is among the youngest ski resorts as it only dates back to the 80s. Its founder is Pete Foote who has since then put a lot of effort into the ski resort. Today Mt Dobson featuring 400 hectares of terrain belongs to the largest ski resorts in New Zealand and even provides a modern chairlift. From Christchurch it takes about 2,5 hours on Highway 1 via Ashburton to get to the resort. Exit at Geraldine and follow the Major Road 79 to Fairlie, from there signs indicate “Mt Dobson Ski Area”. For those coming from Queenstown we recommend to travel there on Highway 8 via Cromwell and Omarama to Fairlie. It’s a 3 hour drive. The beautifully located ski resort envelops you in familiar atmosphere. It is still family run and members of the Foote family can always be encountered either in the cafeteria or at one of the three lifts.
