Telluride: Skiing in the wild west in the company of the 13,000 footers of the San Juan Mountains

In southwestern Colorado, not far from the deserts of New Mexico, some adventurers struck gold and silver in 1870 in the 13,000 foot peaks of the San Juan Mountains. It didn't take long for the gold and treasure miners to move in. And with them came not only the mines themselves, but also the gambling saloons, bars and brothels. Telluride, like so many other towns that still exist today in the Rocky Mountains, owes its existence to that gold rush in the late 19th century. And Telluride's destiny, like that of those other gold mining towns, was to be deserted by those adventurers at the end of the boom and become a ghost town. When investors finally discovered the former mining town's potential in the 1970's, they installed the future ski area's very first lifts. And today many people are once again living off of the mountain's gold – the precious white gold that returns every winter to grace Telluride's many slopes and trails. To reach those slopes, we recommend flying into the airports in Montrose (ca. 62 mi/100km away) or Telluride Regional Airport, which is only about 6 miles (10km) away from the slopes. There are daily flights out of Denver, Phoenix, Chicago and New York into these regional airports. If you decide to drive in from Denver, you won't regret having taken the beautiful scenic route on Interstate 70 through the American Rocky Mountains. When you reach Grand Junction, exit onto Highway 50 and head south until you hit Montrose. Then follow Highway 550 all the way to Ridgeway and then merge onto Route 62. Then take a left onto Route 145 and follow it all the way to Telluride. Be sure to plan in at least seven hours for the road trip, and quite a bit longer in case of bad weather.
