Saas-Fee the Pearl of the Alps
Pearls are precious. Pearls are desirable. And such pearls are found in the midst of the highest Swiss mountains. Thirteen four-thousand-metre peaks wrap themselves around Saas-Fee and its neighbours Saas-Grund, Saas-Almagell and Saas-Balen like a shell. They give the valley its distinctive name of “Pearl of the Alps”. Saas-Fee is a traffic-free resort; access is by car or public transport. Another thing: following the opening of the new base tunnel through the Lötschberg in December 2007, you’ll be fishing for pearls even more quickly. In summer and in winter. Skiing in the sun Skiers and snowboarders, whether beginners, average or experienced, will find plenty to suit their abilities. With ski regions rising up to 3,600 m, snow is guaranteed in Saas-Fee and the Saas valley. Most of the pistes that are not on the glacier are kept in condition by the 95 snow cannons. This guarantees valley runs in Saas Fee until the end of the season (end of April). In Saas-Fee in summer, there are 20 km of varied glacier pistes for snow-lovers. So it is only to be expected that the world’s best skiers should come to Saas-Fee to “fine tune” for the winter. On hot summer days, the region is also a meeting place for snowboarders, who enjoy the delights of the Super Pipe in the Snow Park Allalin. Saas-Fee, the Pearl of the Alps, is situated amidst the highest mountains in Switzerland. Let the magic of the Saas-Valley cast its spell on you. In winter the high-altitude valley benefits from its elevation and enjoys guaranteed snow. Apart from being able to ski up to an altitude of 3600 m above sea-level, visitors also benefit from a wide variety of shops and entertainment. Whether you want to indulge in a little après-ski or enjoy a gentle stroll, whether you want to join in a game of curling or a night-time sledding run, there is every kind of entertainment in the Saas Valley! Families welcome The Saas-Fee/Saas valley holiday region lives the Swiss Tourism Federation’s “Families welcome” quality label. We also think of your pocket: the ski pass for young skiers up to 9 years of age is free. And where else would you find such a wide range of ski lifts so close to the village – and a Kids’ Funpark? Feeding marmots at Spielboden in summer is something the whole family will enjoy. The new children’s playground at Hannig has a 14-metre long slide which is a very popular attraction. Pygmy goats, pot-bellied pigs and lots of other animals are the stars at Hohsi-Land at Kreuzboden. And the “Märliweg” (fairytail trail) is an experience for the whole family! The world’s highest Metro From Saas-Fee the cable car Alpin Express and the new panoramic Felskinnbahn rise up to the glacier tongues on the Felskinn (3,000 m). From there the Metro Alpin, the world’s highest underground funicular, runs to the Mittelallalin. At 3,500 m, in the world’s highest revolving restaurant, these Alpine giants are almost close enough to touch. And visitors can learn some of the secrets of the glaciers in the world’s largest ice pavilion. Traditional village character Even the journey through the Saas valley is an experience. Steep mountainsides and deep gorges hint at the sheer forces of nature that occur here. Traffic-free Saas-Fee has managed to hold on to its rustic character despite its state-of-the-art infrastructure. With their old Valaisian wooden houses and grain barns, Saas-Grund, Saas-Almagell (home to the former skiing ace Pirmin Zurbriggen) and Saas-Balen (famed for its circular Baroque church) have all retained their original village character.
